Glauchau Castle, the predecessor of the later palace complex, was built around 1180 by the Lords of Schönburg on a promontory above the valley of the Zwickauer Mulde. The Lords of Schönburg are one of the oldest Saxon noble families and have owned direct imperial possessions since the 12th century, meaning they were subject to the emperor alone, exercised their own sovereignty and thus belonged to the high nobility. The castle formed the centre of their new dominion of Glauchau.

Waldenburg Castle received its current appearance through an extensive renovation under Prince Otto Victor II of Schönburg-Waldenburg (1882–1914) between 1909 and 1912. Under the overall construction management of the Royal Saxon Court Building Councilor Gustav Frölich (1859–1933), parts of the building from the 19th century were gutted and all rooms and their functions were rearranged according to contemporary requirements. Technically, Gustav Frölich equipped the castle with the most modern achievements for the period around 1910, such as complete electrification, telephone, central steam heating, hot water system, complex ventilation, dumbwaiter, separate fire water pipe and central vacuum cleaner system.

The castle complex has its origins in a castle that was built as a base for the colonization of the Pleißenland between 1165 and 1172. From this founding phase, the lower part of the keep, made of dark humpback blocks, has been preserved to this day. In connection with the Civil Revolution, the Renaissance castle was looted and completely burned down by angry demonstrators on April 5, 1848.

Must see!!! - this beautifully renovated castle. Considering how run down it was and how it had been misused for years. All attention!!! It may not be to everyone's taste, but I love mansions like this. It is also very popular as a film set.

Late Gothic architecture and one of the oldest museums in Saxony come together at Glauchau Castle near Zwickau. The lords of Schönburg built the former castle complex at the end of the 12th century. At that time they belonged to the high nobility and used the medieval castle as a seat of government. Three hundred years later, the castle was redesigned as a residential palace with late Gothic curtain arched windows, pointed arched portals, a ballroom and palace chapel. Since 1940, the museum, which was founded in 1884, has presented the history of the town and castle of Glauchau, the everyday life of the weavers and stately interiors. Two other exhibitions are dedicated to the fine arts and the life and work of Georgius Agricola, the "father of mineralogy".

Hinterglauchau Castle is a Renaissance castle in Glauchau in western Saxony. It was built from 1470 on the site of a castle built around 1170 by the Lords of Schönburg and was the center of their rule for centuries. With the construction of the parts of the building later called Schloss Forderglauchau, the complex was expanded in the direction of the city from around 1525. At the same time, the core lock was rebuilt. A museum was set up in the castle in the early 20th century.
