Where only remnants of walls can be seen today, the ancestral castle of the Württemberg dynasty once stood, before they moved to a newly built castle on the eponymous Wirtemberg hill near Stuttgart at the end of the 11th century. The complex was probably built around the year 1000 and is now one of the most important historical sites in the region. During vineyard consolidation work in the mid-20th century, the castle ruins were rediscovered and excavated.

At the top near the castle there is a free parking space for cars with no time limit. From there it's a five-minute walk to the castle or Thick Tower.

The castle, built around 1260, is still the largest medieval ruin with upright masonry in Stuttgart. From 1369 to 1753, the Lords of Neuhausen were the local and castle lords of Hofen.

I made the ascent through the beautiful alleys and in flatter angles....but it's nice to walk down the many steps.

Text of the inscription on the ruins: POOR KONRAD'S REBELLION 1514 WHEN IT WAS 1500 YEARS AND 14 AFTER, HEAR WHAT WAS HAPPENING AT THIS TIME: THEN A GREAT NOISE BEGAN AND A GREAT SWEAR BEGAN. THE FARMERS SWORE A HARD OATH: IF THEIR LORD WAS STILL SORRY, THEY DID NOT WANT TO DO THIS THING AND WERE NOT TO TAKE THIS WEIGHT. ONCE BYTELSPACH BEGAN, THE OTHER HEPPACH AND GRUNBACH. THE DRY VILLAGES MERGED TOGETHER. THEY STAYED IN KAPPELBERG FOR 5 DAYS IN DEFENCE OF THE PRINCE OF WÜRTTEMBERG.
