Salt mining in the Aveiro region dates back to a time before the Ria de Aveiro itself existed, with the first written document about Aveiro salt production dating back to before the founding of the nation. Over the centuries, the instability of the inlet (isolation from the sea) was a decisive factor in the variation in the number and production of salt pans. This resulted in periods of decline interspersed with periods of great favorability for production. This occurred in 1572, when, given the favorable condition of the inlet and the high and progressive commercial and maritime index, Aveiro became one of the best ports in Portugal, with a significant increase in salt trade and cod fishing. In 1808, the new inlet (an artificial system that allows seawater to enter) was finally opened, a fact of exceptional importance for the future of Aveiro and the entire region. Very tasty cakes and donuts with filling, aromatic coffee and pleasant maintenance staff. Prices, as usual in such a cafe in Portugal, surprise and delight. Highly recommend. It is a little away from the center, but in the city center we did not find anything good for a snack.

Beautiful little chapel in Oliveira do Bairro. It is close to the new cemetery and can be easily seen as you walk along the street.

The Oliveira do Bairro Parish Church, built in the 17th century and renovated in the 19th century, stands out for its baroque interior with gilded altarpieces and sacred images, including Saint Michael the Archangel and the Virgin of the Rosary.

The Nossa Senhora de Vagos sanctuary is a popular pilgrimage center, dating back to the 16th century and has undergone several renovations. The origin of the cult and the sanctuary is associated with the founding of Portuguese nationality. The legend of the image and the hermitage goes back to a sunken Gallic ship, from which a sculpture of Saint Mary was saved and hidden in a tree tuft. Later, a hunchbacked farmer, miraculously cured, built the original hermitage.
