✓The Mira River is one of Portugal's most emblematic rivers, known for its environmental preservation and for being one of the rare European rivers with a predominantly south-to-north course. ✓Main Characteristics Source and Mouth: It originates in the Serra do Caldeirão mountain range and flows into the Atlantic Ocean near Vila Nova de Milfontes. ✓Length: It has an estuary of approximately 32 kilometers in length, forming part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park. ✓Water Availability: The irrigation campaign in the Mira perimeter for 2026 will have an availability of 16 hm³, an increase of approximately 1 hm³ compared to the previous year. ✓Nautical Tourism: The municipality of Odemira has reinforced its commitment to nautical tourism with the inauguration of new projects to enhance the offer, focusing on improving the navigability conditions of the river.

The walk across the bridge over the Mira River is definitely worth recommending! The view of the wide river is absolutely wonderful. There's a designated pedestrian area so you can walk across in a relaxed manner. When I was there on Tuesday morning, there was virtually no traffic on the bridge.

This bridge near Vila Nova De Milfontes is the last opportunity to cross the Mira before the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean, about two kilometers from here. It began its river life in the Serra do Caldeirã, and the distance from source to mouth is 145 kilometers.

Depending on time of day, can be lots of traffic. Yet, all were polite and gave us plenty of room while passing.
