A really beautiful street

Beautiful cycle path along the Hase river.

The Schützenhof weir was located approximately 2 km southeast of the town center of Quakenbrück in the Hase River. It consisted of a fishbelly gate with a spillway width of 8 m and a spillway height of 3 m. The weir, constructed of sturdy oak planks, was built in 1683 in the artificial arm of the Hase (Überfallhase). Its purpose was to divert floodwaters from the Hase River around the town of Quakenbrück. The difference in elevation between the upstream and downstream water levels at this location was approximately 3.93 m at mean low water (MNQ) and 1.49 m at mean high water (MHQ). The flow velocities in the weir's discharge stream exceeded 4 m/s year-round. This resulted in extensive scouring in the downstream area of the weir, making the structure impassable for fish and macrozoobenthos.

The fish pass at Schützenhof has become a popular destination for outings. Here, the water now flows for 222 meters, at the site of the former Hase weir, where there was once a nearly four-meter difference in elevation between the elevated Hase River above and the canalized Hase below, flowing towards Essen. Fish can now once again migrate upstream at the newly constructed fish ladder with its large boulders, as confirmed by counts and measurements in the temporarily installed fish trap.

Behind the old mill, the old wooden mill wheel is still suspended in the water. There are plenty of lovely seating areas and tables all around for a rest. The trees provide shade, perfect for a break.

Watermill, beautifully situated after a tour through the forested grounds of the Merzen golf course. The forest path is very easy to ride on an e-bike.
