The Legend of the Rice Mill The Frankish King Pippin commissioned his court marshal to escort his promised bride – the count's daughter Bertha – to Freising. However, the deceitful court master had other plans. He abandoned the girl in the forest and presented his own daughter as a bride to the king. Bertha wandered aimlessly through the forest and found refuge in the rice mill. Years later, Pippin got lost while hunting in the forest and came to the miller's house. He recognized his then-bride because she was still wearing his ring. Charlemagne was supposedly conceived that very first night. The alleged cradle of Charlemagne can still be seen in the rice mill today. The Gauting coat of arms, by the way, depicts a silver mill wheel with twelve paddles and a golden imperial crown – also a tribute to the community's most famous son.
