The square is increasingly becoming an "amusement park," with a Ferris wheel and numerous stalls selling junk. The original character is falling by the wayside.

The Sítio, at the highest point of the town (which can be reached by elevator) is undoubtedly its best viewpoint. It is also linked to the cult of Our Lady of Nazaré who, according to a 12th century legend, was invoked by the mayor D. Fuas Roupinho who, while chasing a deer, would fall into the abyss, with no possible escape. As a token of gratitude for the grace he had received, D. Fuas Roupinho ordered the construction of a small chapel here - the Ermida da Memória. A short distance away, the Sanctuary was built in the 18th century, where grand festivals are held in September. Some fallow deer in the enclosure - but there is no indication why there is an enclosure here (in the middle of nowhere)🤔

The Sítio district is located above Nazaré. From here you have an unforgettable panoramic view of the Praia de Nazaré, the city and the ocean.
