The former Wentorf Castle is a multi-part complex. The oval main castle, measuring 63 meters long and 35 meters wide, rises 5 to 10 meters above the still-damp surroundings. Around 1900, stone packing, charcoal, bones, pottery shards, and iron tools were excavated at the main castle. Further finds were recovered during regular inspections of the castle. Based on a document from 1272, it is inferred that the castle may have belonged to a knight named Echardus Rowededer thereafter. The archaeological finds indicate use in the late 13th and 14th centuries. Unfortunately, no remains of the castle complex, now a listed historical monument, are visible; only the castle hill remains.

Very nice castle, very few people in Hamburg know about this gem. One of the most beautiful Christmas markets in northern Germany also takes place on the Schloßwiese.

In earlier years, lions and other predators were often and gladly placed as guardian figures in front of castles and mansions. The lioness in the Bergedorf Castle Park is much more recent and otherwise deviates from the usual forms of representation. She shows much less impressiveness than many of her male counterparts and also looks in the direction of the castle instead of watching in front of it. The granite sculpture shows simplified, flowing lines with rear legs set far back. Originally there was also a tiger by the same artist in the palace park next to the lioness.
