Very nice museum with a lot to see and explore.

You just have to see it once. This lock is huge and the technology is ancient but ingenious.

Impressive buildings of industrial culture can be visited here. Very well done permanent exhibition with many great, up-to-date museum didactic elements, e.g. augment reality brings the distant machines back to life. The canal trips from the ship's perspective in time lapse are also very cool.

One of the most popular destinations on the Industrial Heritage Route is the LWL Industrial Museum at the Henrichenburg ship lift in Waltrop. The imposing facility amazes even those who don't like technology. The boat lift from the turn of the century is an exciting destination, especially for children. The Henrichenburg ship lift has now been voted number 1 of the most popular industrial monuments in NRW by WDR viewers in the "Hitlists of the West".

In 1905, the Prussian state parliament decided to erect a reserve structure that could take over the function of the hoist in the event of a breakdown. In 1908 the excavation work for the new building began. In 1914 the shaft lock was put into operation. At the time it was one of the two largest shaft and savings locks in the world. Its sister structure was the Minden shaft lock on the Mittelland Canal, which was built around the same time. In 1990 the lock was shut down and dismantled. The western savings basin had to give way to a parking lot. After the system has been drained, you can walk through the former lock chamber on a footpath.

The historic part of the lift has been rebuilt here so that you can now go up and down the old lock. Very worth seeing, also the adjacent parts with the canal harbor and the lock park.
