Maierhofen Castle is located in the Maierhofen district of the Lower Bavarian market town of Painten in the district of Kelheim. The castle is registered as a "landscape-defining architectural monument" under the monument number D-2-73-159-10 in the Bavarian monument list. The complex is also listed as an archaeological monument under the file number D-2-7036-0174 in the Bavaria Atlas as "underground medieval and early modern findings in the area of the castle and the Catholic side church of St. Sebastian, formerly the castle chapel, in Maierhofen, previously probably a medieval castle".

Like the even more beautiful Prekowa across from Strasbourg, this is an incredibly beautiful and quiet uphill road. Quite steep in between, but always quite even ascent mostly through the forest. Have fun with the great descent on a good surface. The Haider monument up in Gunzenberg is rather shocking - in Carinthia fascists are still honored. Sad but true.
