Through one of the curved alleys you reach the large town square, which already had these dimensions when the town was founded. On the lower town square there are still a considerable number of Gothic houses, with their narrow fronts, high pointed gables and rear buildings that cannot be seen from the square. Since these houses have only been changed a little, we can still find the narrow, often quite winding staircases inside. With a few exceptions, the middle town square was largely destroyed in the great town fire in 1874. On the east side in particular, the high gable walls had to be torn down and the roofs turned 90 degrees. On the upper town square we find the houses of the once wealthy cloth makers and linen weavers. The houses have wide fronts, the windows are framed by delicate window frames and the interior of these houses has wide staircases and corridors, as well as rooms with some very beautiful stucco ceilings. The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Stephan is a landmark of the town of Braunau am Inn and, with its 87 m high tower, has one of the highest church towers in Austria. Since January 1, 2023, St. Stephan has been one of 14 parishes in the parish of Braunau in the diocese of Linz. Typologically, the building is in the tradition of the Landshut school of architecture and, in terms of the vault figuration, is related to or exemplary for the St. John's Church in Dingolfing, the Holy Spirit Hospital Church in Landshut or the St. Nicholas Parish Church in Eggenfelden.
