The castle is located on a steep slope on the left side of the Danube. The three-storey, rectangular main building with a round tower bears the year 1586 in the courtyard. The elongated south wing connects to this. On the north side there is a small round tower and on the extreme east you can see the square keep of the old castle. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_denkmalgesch%C3%BCtzten_Objecte_in_Hofkirchen_im_M%C3%BChlkreis

The structurally very extensive castle complex comprised a total area of 2960 square meters. At the top of the rock formation converging to the west above the Rannatal valley was the keep on the outermost rock slab, to which the main castle with the palace adjoined, which was dominated by two towers. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_denkmalgesch%C3%BCtzten_Objecte_in_Hofkirchen_im_M%C3%BChlkreis

I love stories - & legendary places.... Legend of the mermaid Lilofee The legend of the mermaid Lilofee is entwined around the water tower of Falkenstein: Othmar der Oberhaimer is said to have fallen in love with a beautiful woman on the way back from the Imperial Palace on the Rhine, but she was a mermaid. She was willing to move with him to his castle, but only on the condition that she was allowed to spend every full moon night alone in the water tower. That went well for a long time, until envious people urged Othmar to see what his wife was doing in the tower. Curious, he crept to the tower and peered in through a crack in the door. He saw his wife sitting by the water, but instead of feet she had a flipper. Then thunder cracked and the mermaid Lilofee was gone forever and Othmar was left behind. (Source: Wikipedia)

The renovation work has come to a standstill. The tower can be accessed at your own risk via the vertical metal ladder. It is advisable to take a lamp with you because of the narrow stairs with little to no daylight.

On a plaque in front of Marsbach Castle it is written: Marsbach Castle - once a robber baron's castle "In the olden days, Marsbach was a nightmare for merchant and boatmen's escorts" as the saying goes. It refers in particular to the time when Otmar Oberhaimer owned the castle at the end of the 15th century. He was later executed for his acts of violence and looting. But things weren't always so combative here. Marsbach is one of the first documented places. As early as 1075 "Morspah" appeared in the records. For more than 500 years, a castle that was not very large, but extremely difficult to attack, stood up here. In the middle of the 16th century this was demolished and the much larger Renaissance palace was built. Marsbach became the judicial and administrative center of the region and remained so until 1848. Today the castle is privately owned by Mr. Georg Stradiot.

The Falkenstein castle ruins are located high above the Ranna and were first mentioned in a document in 1140. Falkenstein Castle was once a large, strategically important castle complex and an important aristocratic seat. The dilapidated remains are currently being renovated and secured. The fortified tower built over a spring in 1489 is still accessible.

Short hike, about 40 minutes, goes over forest roads with a beautiful view, stairs in the tower are a bit steep and the trap door at the top of the tower is also a bit tricky and you should close it again when leaving, you also have different options of paths to choose from, directly from St.Agatha from the intersection (organic waste storage) or a little further down, there you go to the right, there is only a small, wild parking bay (about 4-5 cars)

Marsbach Castle is a castle in the Danube Valley south of Marsbach near Hofkirchen in the Mühlkreis in Upper Austria. The castle is the oldest aristocratic residence in the upper Mühlviertel. From the complex, which has the character of a fortress, you can see the Danube from Niederranna to the Schlögener Schlinge. This was of great importance for the feuding knights resident there, today referred to for short as robber barons.
