The church serves as a votive church for a miraculous crucifix. Archduke Leopold V initiated the construction of a church in 1629, and it was completed in 1666. At that time, the Seekirchl stood in the middle of the Kreuzsee, which had been created by Duke Sigmund the Rich in the 15th century and drained in 1808. It is a high baroque, octagonal central building with a dome, a rare building style in Tyrol, with an attached tower. The wrought iron grille of the chancel in the cartilage style was installed under the gallery in 1978 - "somewhat inappropriately". The church is a listed building.

The Seekirchl - also called the Holy Cross Church - is probably the most famous landmark in Seefeld. It houses an old cross whose history dates back to 1628.
