Elm was buried by a landslide on September 11, 1881. Over 100 people lost their lives and around 80 buildings were destroyed. The landslide was triggered by improperly executed slate mining.
In summer, the mountain station offers a bleak insight into the machinations of winter sports. Nevertheless, of course, a worthwhile goal of an MTB tour, if only because of the altitude and the view of the glacier and summit.
