The Bannalpsee is a popular excursion destination in central Switzerland and is located in the municipality of Wolfenschiessen in the canton of Nidwalden. The lake is located in a beautiful mountain landscape at an altitude of 1587 meters above sea level. The Bannalp reservoir is fed by the Bannalpbach and the Secklisbach, the latter of which flows out of the lake. The Bannalp power station is operated by the Nidwalden Cantonal Electricity Works (EWN).

The Musenalp area is a plateau bordered on both sides by rock walls. Towards the southeast, they converge towards each other like the bow of an oversized ship.
