The term Marterl or Marter is often used as a generalization for wayside shrines and other field monuments. The Austrian/South German name is derived from the word martyr/martyr (ancient Greek μάρτυς mártys “witness”, “blood witness”).

In 1889 a Way of the Cross to the chapel on Kapellenberg with fourteen stations was built as a staircase from the town center. For this purpose, stone columns with colored depictions made of cast zinc were erected. In 2004, the Ergoldsbach Women's Association added a fifteenth station, “Jesus Rises from the Dead”.

In 1825 there was already a newly built chapel on the Kapellenberg. This was dismantled in 1895 and moved to Kläham. This has now been demolished - only a bell from the Ergoldsbach period remains. In the same year, the then Ergoldsbach pastor Igl had the new mountain chapel built on the northern outer wall of the rampart fortress. It was completed in 1896 and is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. Therefore, today it is usually referred to as the Lourdes Chapel. Church services are held here regularly and a rosary is recited weekly.
