In recent centuries the place has been called Wildbad or Wildbad Gastein. From 1906 to 1996 the community was called Badgastein. On January 1st 1997 the spelling was changed to Bad Gastein. The name "Gastein" comes from two Indo-Germanic roots and means either "grey river" or "foaming river". The oldest document still in existence with the name form "Gastuna" can be found in a document from the noble Rosmuot from 963.

Bad Gastein is actually a bit out of date and some of the buildings are empty. Big old hotels in an alpine area and yet somehow fascinating.
