The Flößgraben is an 11.0 km long artificial watercourse in the Thuringian district of Gotha, which was created to better supply the water-scarce district town of Gotha with water from the Thuringian Forest. It is formed by the bifurcation of the Apfelstädt River in Georgenthal and flows into the Leina Canal in Emleben, which was also created by an artificial bifurcation. Since the water from the Apfelstädt flows into the Elbe via the Gera, Unstrut, and Saale, while that from the Leina Canal flows into the Weser via the Nesse, Hörsel, and Werra, the ditch crosses the Elbe-Weser watershed. The ditch got its name because its water made it possible for the first time to transport firewood (logs) on the Leina Canal system from the Thuringian Forest to Gotha. The Flößgraben begins at the "Georgenthal Divider," a so-called "three-trap weir." The Apfelstädt is divided here by a small island. About 10 meters below the divide is the first "trap," a lockable gate that regulates the flow of water into the Flößgraben or blocks it completely, for example, during repair work. Next to it, the Apfelstädt River is dammed so that some of the water can flow into the Flößgraben. About 20 meters further downstream from the first "trap," the water from the Flößgraben encounters two more "traps." Here, too, the water flow in the Flößgraben can be influenced by diverting the water over a small waterfall into the Apfelstädt River, which is now about 6 meters lower. The Flößgraben runs parallel to the Apfelstädt River for about 50 meters and then flows under Federal Highway 88 into the small mill pond, then into the large mill pond. Both ponds were created at the beginning of the 17th century and served to slow down the logs carried in the canal, as water reservoirs for the following mills, to collect the silt carried along with it, and for fishing. The island in the large mill pond, for example, is made from the pond's cleaning sludge, which was created when French and Russian prisoners of war cleaned the pond during the First World War. It continues through Petriroda north of Georgenthal and finally flows into the Leina Canal in Emleben, which has been called the Small Leina Canal since the construction of the rafting ditch above its mouth. The water from the Leina Canal still fills the Gotha park ponds and powers the Gotha Waterworks (water features) on Gotha's main market square. https://de-academic.com/dic.nsf/dewiki/2360992
