The picturesque old town and the historic market square with the richly decorated half-timbered houses invite you to linger. The history of the place is closely linked to the history of the castle and the counts of Solms-Braunfels. After a fire in 1678, the market square was rebuilt. Today there is the tourist information, gastronomy and small shops with a wide range of different goods.

Runkel is located in the Lahn valley between the Westerwald and Taunus. Runkel was first mentioned in a document in 1259. Runkel Castle is outstanding. A knight of Charlemagne is said to have decided to build a castle in 787. The castle was built to secure the Lahn crossing and has been expanded several times.
