Olympia was the sanctuary of Zeus in Elis. It was the host site of the ancient Olympic Games. The land at the confluence of the Cladeus and Alpheus rivers has a long history of settlement. The oldest ceramic finds in the area of the stadium date back to the fourth millennium BC, i.e., to the end of the Neolithic period or the beginning of the Chalcolithic period. Settlement history ends with the establishment of the sanctuary at this site, as no human habitation was permitted in the area dedicated to Zeus. While the sanctuary was built around the middle of the 11th century BC, the first evidence of regular competitions dates from shortly before the beginning of the 7th century BC. The stadium is surrounded by simple grass banks that could accommodate around 45,000 spectators.

The Philippeion is dedicated to Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great.

All known excavations are grouped together into one site.

Nice spot for a break with a great view during the long climb. Unfortunately the bench has fallen apart.

Next to the old stone bridge is the exit point from the Neda Gorge to reach the waterfalls.
