The Grottenherten windmill is located in an open field near the twin towns of Kirch-Grottenherten and can be seen from afar. A support association has been looking after the preservation of the monument for many years and occasionally opens the mill to visitors. It should not be missed on any hike or bike tour through the area.

The history of the mill On the Mühlenberg With the invasion of the French into the Rhineland in 1798, the mill ban was finally abolished. Until then, almost all mills were owned by the local rulers and only they were allowed to build and operate mills. Farmers were told in which mills they had to have their grain milled. With the fall of the mill ban, a real "mill boom" developed and around a dozen windmills could be seen from the Mühlenberg of the Grottenherten mill. The Grottenherten windmill was built by Anton Iven, who settled in Grottenherten with his wife Gertrud Rath. He bought several farms next to each other, tore them down and built his estate. In 1831 he built the mill about half a kilometer outside of the town. It is said that in the middle of the 19th century the mill and the adjacent residential buildings served as a "living space" for eight people. The half-timbered barn located near the Grottenherten mill was bought in 1881 by the miller at the time in the Eifel, demolished there and rebuilt next to the mill. The mill was given an electric motor in the 1930s, which made the miller independent of wind and weather. In the meantime the mill also had a steam engine, which was housed in the adjacent machine house. It probably powered another grinding mill in the storage room. The last master miller, Josef Bickendorf, continued to grind grain in the Grottenherten mill until 1964. A nice spot to escape quickly from Odenkirchen into nature

Small but definitely worth seeing. If you are hiking or cycling nearby (Borussenpark, Hardter Wald), the caves are worth a short detour for a contemplative rest.
