The four castles, and especially Swallow's Nest, have inspired many legends and stories. Victor Hugo invented the story of the robber baron "Bligger the Scourge," who had his seat at the castle, and Mark Twain also mentions it in his "A Tramp Through Europe."
The well-preserved ruins are freely accessible, and the walkable battlements on the two-winged shield wall offer a magnificent view.

The Four Castles Tour in Neckarsteinach takes you to Vorderburg, Mittelburg, Hinterburg, and Schadeck Castle ("Swallow's Nest") 🏰. The route offers magnificent views of the Neckar Valley 🌊, historic walls, and is ideal as a circular walk along the Neckarsteig Trail 🥾—compact, scenic, and steeped in history.

Originally a Celtic refuge, then the Romans arrived, and in the 12th century, a castle was built. It came into the possession of the Electorate of the Palatinate around 1300 and was then intended as a refuge for the ruler and his entourage from Heidelberg in case of emergency. The people of Dilsberger were granted town-like rights and, in return, were obliged to provide accommodations in case of emergency. With the dissolution of the Electorate of the Palatinate in 1803, the castle came into the possession of the state of Baden. In 1822, the castle was approved for demolition. A very scenic route with great views of and from the castles. The way is easy to go. Not all castles can be visited, the Schadeck is currently also closed due to construction work. But it's still worth it.

ok, 2 of the 4 can "only" be seen from the outside, but the inhabited castles are especially beautiful!

The Dilsberg Castle Fortress is known for its fantastic panoramic view of the Neckar Valley and the Odenwald. Another highlight of the castle festivals is a bit lower - in the accessible underground well tunnel. Should be reopened from March 26th, 2021

Beautiful castle ruins with a great view. Often well attended on weekends because the castles are well known and the hiking trails on the castle tour are not particularly demanding. Ideal for children.

There are several castles and castle ruins on the Neckar. But here there are 4 pieces to hike within a few meters. And every historical building is a little different.
