The Aartalsee is a lovely place to hike around. The route length, including the beautiful nature reserve is about 8 kilometers long. This path is very busy on the weekends as it is also used by skaters and cyclists. There are restaurants along the route offering food and drinks at moderate prices. There are sufficient parking spaces for cars and motorcycles for a fee. You can also find a motorhome parking space there.

The Aartalsee is located in the upper Aartal in the communities of Bischoffen and Hohenahr in the Lahn-Dill district, north of its district town of Wetzlar and northwest of Gießen in Hesse. The Aartalsperre damms the Aar in its upper section west of the Niederweidbach basin and forms an artificially created lake in the southern Gladenbach mountains. The dam mainly serves to protect the Aar and Dill from flooding. Other uses include low water elevation, power generation, fishing and recreational recreation. The dam should also stimulate the region economically. The lake was opened as a swimming lake in 1992.
