The medieval moated castle was replaced by a Renaissance building in 1574. The tail gables and a beautifully designed niche portal are striking. Today, concerts and various events take place in this ballroom at regular intervals. It is also possible to get married in the castle. Altenburg Castle is a former residential palace of the Dukes of Saxony-Altenburg. It is located in the center of Altenburg in Thuringia. It houses the exhibition areas Ducal Apartments 17th/18th. Century, 19th/20th Century and the playing card museum.

With the castle, Ponitz has one of the most important Renaissance buildings in the region. It was built on the site of an old Slavic moated castle from 1568 to 1574 under Abraham von Thumbshirn. His successor, Wolfgang Conrad von Thumbshirn, signed the Peace of Westphalia for the duchy.
