At this point, the castle complex was secured by a moat and the gate building (Mathiastor). Originally, a drawbridge led over the moat, which was replaced by a stone dam in the 18th century. The mighty quarry stone gate was reinforced with two massive front towers. On the upper floor of the now two-story gate was the battlement, which was replaced by a hipped roof in the 19th century. The core of the Mathiastor dates back to the 14th century and was given its current appearance through several restorations.
