We have been going on cycling holidays for many years and the Ruhr Valley cycle path is one of the most beautiful. I never thought the Ruhr area would be so green.

The Styrum Water Tower was built in 1892/93 by August Thyssen to supply his iron rolling mill. The tower supplied water to Styrum, and soon after to Bottrop as well. In 1912, the building became the property of the newly founded RWW Rheinisch-Westfälische Wasserwerksgesellschaft mbH (Rhenish-Westphalian Waterworks Company). Until its decommissioning in 1982, the tower primarily supplied process water, initially to Thyssen, and later to Mannesmann. Since 1992, it has housed a museum – whose award-winning exhibition uses computer simulations, films, and games to inform visitors about the origin, cycle, and forms of water. Since 1999, the Aquarius has been an anchor point on the Industrial Heritage Trail – a project of the Regional Association Ruhr (RVR) that connects the most important and touristically attractive industrial monuments of the Ruhr region as a themed tourist route. ... 📸Great photo spot 📸

The Historical Museum of Mülheim an der Ruhr is also located in Broich Castle. The former fortress with its checkered history is the right location to present history in a vivid way. For example, a three-dimensional wooden model of Mülheim shows what it looked like during the reign of Napoleon I. Excavation finds, the family trees of the former lords of the castle and a room for the Prussian Queen Luise, who was a guest here when she was young, will be encountered on a journey through the centuries. Historic cityscapes and weapons from bygone times complete the diverse collection. Temporary exhibitions repeatedly illuminate individual aspects of Mülheim's city history.
