The Drachenstein offers a wonderful view towards Inselsberg and Hörselberg. It is located on the wine route between “Hohe Sonne” and “Mosbacher Linde”.

Super beautiful old buildings with lots of history.

The inner courtyard is well worth seeing with the Palas, the cistern, its half-timbered buildings and the medieval castle garden. Everything is renovated and beautifully prepared.

Here at 978 m you have a really great all-round view of other peaks in the Thuringian Forest and the Rhön, up to the Ettersberg near Weimar and Oberhof. With very good visibility, such as winter inversion weather conditions, the view extends to the Brocken in the Harz Mountains, to the Schneeberg (Fichtelgebirge) and to the western Ore Mountains. You can also see the “Wilde Gera” (A 71) motorway bridge, the largest arched bridge in Germany with a span of 252 m. https://schneekopf.eu/ And if you want, you can crack the 1000 meter mark here on the observation tower for three euros. Diligence also has its price.

If you have time and muse and the weather is good, you should definitely watch a sunset or a sunrise. The view of the surrounding area is breathtaking for our low mountain range. Definitely recommended. If available, also like to pack the binoculars. One or the other detail wants to be spotted.

The summit cross on the Schneekopf, built in 2018, is the first thing you will see - coming from the steep north path - after a strenuous ascent. In contrast to most summit crosses, this one does not have a summit book in which you could register. The massive cross is well suited for the photo album.

The Schneekopf, the second highest elevation in the Thuringian Forest, is worth a visit at any time of the year. You rarely get peace here, because the Schneekopf offers two worthwhile attractions - the observation tower and the Neue Gehlberger Hütte - which are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and receive guests from all over the world. Many seating options and lovingly designed picnic benches invite you to linger.
