The Žofín primeval forest, together with another nearby primeval forest, Hojná Voda, are the oldest reserves in Central Europe. The protection of the primeval forest goes a step further at Žofínsky prales. It is under strict scientific supervision and can only be entered for research purposes with a special permit. The protected area with an area of 100 hectares is fenced.
