Since 1306, St. Mary's has been the church of a Dominican convent. The St. Mary's Abbey for Ladies in Lemgo, a Lippe convent, still exists today and is under the supervision of the Lippe Regional Association. In 1971, the St. Mary's Abbey was merged with the Cappel Abbey near Lippstadt by state law. From 1250 onward, an independent new town developed in the south of Lemgo. It was clear that the new town needed its own church. Construction is dated to around 1260. According to legend, the church was built on the site of an earlier chapel dedicated to Mary, which is said to have been the first structure on the site.
