Follow the signs at the harbour promenade to Dunnottar Castle - they lead up some (extremely!) steep paved paths to the hills above. Views of Stonehaven from the top are spectacular. Carry on up to a small lay-by/car park, take a right and another 5-10 minute ride down a country lane brings you to the castle itself (on the left) with yet more stunning views. From there, use the singletrack gravel paths (you may have to dismount and hike-a-bike at certain points, depending on your confidence/skill levels) to loop back along the coastline to the aforementioned steep paved paths and down into Stonehaven. Highly recommended!

Stonehaven is a popular seaside town with lots of small cafes and restaurants as well as a good Sandy beach and harbour. There are short walks along the boardwalk and a costal path to Dunottar Castle. The local woods also have several paths to explore.

Gorgeous little harbour to take a break. There's a hidden path that you can use to get all the way up to the cliff to the south to get some lovely views.

Lovely quiet road that passes through Paldyfair Wood

If you continue 1km further wast on the road you will reach the gothic style Episcopal church which is part of the Drumtochty estate grounds.

A must stop for anyone on a trip to Aberdeenshire. Stunning views of this small fishing town.

If you plan on heading North over the Cairn o Mount and further inland this is the last refuse stop for supplies for a while with some exposed and very steep paved terrain and even more ascent off road. If heading South from the Cairn O Mount descent the Clattering Brig is the last supply stop before Laurencekirk with railway access, and Fettercairn.

Lovely historic harbour with some nice pubs and restaurants.

(Six Degrees North) Fantastic Belgium style pub, lots of different beers on tap which they brew themselves round the corner. Food is also great, stunning location, pretty much has it all.

Large, busy town with full facilities and a fine and very photogenic harbour where there is a good museum and two pubs. Hourly bus or train to Montrose.

Distinctive gothic styled Episcopal church in the Drumtochty estate grounds.

The fish bar has very generous serving sizes, so come hungry. The fish suppers are reasonably priced, but ketchup or tartar sauces cost extra.
