Many of the ancient oak trees in Savernake Forest are believed to have served as boundary markers, predating the formation of England itself. There are around 30 in total and they are a beautiful addition to the forest.

GPS is hit and miss around Savernake Forest so you can miss the paths you wanted.

Savernake Forest is a reminant of the vast ancient woodland which once covered much of Britain. It's a former Royal Stag hunting forest. Today it's privately owned but open to the public and managed by the Forestry England. It's home to numerous ancient trees, mostly Oaks between 1,000 & 1,100 years old. Many are individually named, reflecting the appearance and character of these amazing life forms.

Look out for deer, squirrels and rare lichens on old trees.

There are many narrower walkways within the forest which take you to the quieter and most interesting parts.

Covering an area of 7 sq miles (18 sq km) Savernake Forest is an enchanting place to explore. Originally created around AD 934 as a royal woodland, the forest has lived through exciting British history from the Civil War to Norman Conquest. Once a beloved hunting ground of King Henry VIII, it is believed that he met his future wife Jane Seymour here, daughter of Sir John Seymour, head of the estate. Today, the forest makes up part of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Beauty. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful species of trees and varied wildlife.
