Established in 1973, the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway is a family-run business. Steam engines pull 1950s carriages through the scenic Leven Valley to Lakeside Station, where you can connect with Windermere Lake Cruises.

Grab an ice cream or coffee at Oscar's Cafe perched on the south western shore of Windermere. The menu is quite limited but it's a lovely location overlooking the lake. It gets very busy in the summer.

Hawkshead is another small touristy type village. Compact, close knit streets, cul-de-sacs, etc. Souvenir shops , pubs and restaurants are all located here. Good parking, toilets, signage of local areas are all there

Formerly part of Lancashire, Newby Bridge is a quaint village nestled along the banks of the River Leven, situated at the southern end of Lake Windermere. Its name is derived from the distinguished five-arched stone bridge, constructed across the river in the year 1651. There's a curved weir just below Newby Bridge which controls the amount of water flowing into River Leven from Lake Windermere.

This is a great traffic-free link that avoids the busy A590. It's a lovely smooth surface with great views and is part of the Bay Cycleway (NCN 700).

From the Promenade in Arnside, stop to admire the Arnside Viaduct, a 51-span marvel, carrying the Carnforth and Whitehaven Line over the estuary of the River Kent. It's 1566 feet (477 m) long, and is for trains only. Initially crafted in 1856 as a singular track viaduct, this feat of engineering underwent expansion to accommodate twin tracks in 1863.

It's a bit of a techy climb from the newby bridge halt end, or a bit of fun downhill doubletrack coming the other way. Definitely kid/spouse/noob friendly in either direction. I climbed it on 37mm touring tires, fully bagged up with work uniform, in 27deg C heat, if you use that as a gauge. Also, sheep in fields, possibly with lambs, so kindly shut the f***in gates!

Cartmel is an ancient village that is well known for its 12th century Priory that has ancient choir stalls, ornate stained glass windows and modern sculptures. The village has many pubs as well as L'Enclume, a highly regarded restaurant with 2 michelin stars and was named Britains best restaurant in the 2020 Good Food Guide.

Arnside is a great place to start or end a bike ride with a local train station connecting to Lancaster. Also good for a stop-off on a longer ride.

Cartmel is well known for its parish church, a former Augustine priory, and for being the 'home of sticky toffee pudding'. It is a good base for exploring the beautiful South Lakes. The village is also known for hosting L'Enclume, an exceptional institution that holds two Michelin stars are was named as Britain's best restaurant in 2020's Good Food Guide.
