The Olpkebach is a small stream in the south of Dortmund that flows through the Bittermark nature reserve. This area is a wooded urban forest that stretches along the northern slope of the Ardey Mountains. The stream rises in the Bittermark city forest and receives several tributaries there, including the Brandisbach and the Bittermarksbach, before flowing through the Olpkebach valley. At the end of the valley, the Olpkebach runs underground in a canal for a short section. It is part of the Emscher river system and eventually flows into the Schondelle, which in turn flows into the Emscher. The Bittermark nature reserve is characterized by old beech and oak forests and serves as a popular recreational area. The area also shows traces of previous mining activities that date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Remains of former tunnels and pits as well as red-colored mine water springs containing iron oxide are visible evidence of this past. The area is also historically significant due to the Bittermark Memorial, which commemorates the Nazi crimes committed during the Second World War. Today, the Olpkebach in the middle of the green forest offers a natural environment characterized by a lively stream system and rich flora, making it an important part of nature and recreation conservation in the south of Dortmund.
