The view of the Danube is breathtakingly beautiful.

A real highlight, a magnificent monument to the coronation of St. Stephen I. The basilica with its flag in the background makes it a great photo opportunity. From this spot, you also have a magnificent view of the Danube and the Maria Valeria Bridge.

The Millennium Monument in Esztergom is located directly next to the basilica and commemorates the coronation of the first Hungarian king, Stephen I, in the year 1000. It is a modern statue, whose curved shape takes some getting used to, depicting the coronation of Saint Stephen and rising behind the basilica above the banks of the Danube.

Esztergom offers impressive views of the Danube, especially from the basilica, perched on a rocky outcrop directly above the river. From the basilica's dome, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Danube and the surrounding countryside, including the Slovak town of Sturovo opposite.

Stephen I, considered the first king of Hungary and later canonized, was born, baptized, and crowned in Esztergom. He was originally known as Vajk before adopting the name Stephen after his baptism.

The statue is a popular hiking highlight in the Komárom-Esztergom region and is part of several hikes, including easy circular routes from Esztergom to the Basilica and the Millennium Monument. Mindszenty, who served as Archbishop of Esztergom from 1945 to 1973, is considered a central figure of the Catholic Church in Central Europe during the communist era and, according to the Encyclopædia Britannica, embodied an uncompromising opposition to fascism and communism.
