The Loe, also called Loe Pool, is a freshwater lake cared for by the National Trust. Loe actually means 'pool' in Cornish, so Loe Pool is really like saying pool pool! Recently a lot of hard work has gone into improving the declining water quality of the Loe, caused by nearby sewerage treatment works and agricultural run-off. Legend has it that this is where King Arthur threw his sword Excalibur, although it has never been found...

Very interesting historical place. On the pasture behind the small museum there are relics of the old radio station.

In December 1901 the first transatlantic signal was sent from this spot at Poldhu Cove. As the information sign says, from this point on, the world shrank. The centre houses the equipment used in this huge moment in communications history. You can visit the Marconi Centre for free on Sundays. A quiet spot, Polurrian Cove might not have lots of facilities but it's popular with locals, especially surfers. As the tide goes out it reveals a large sandy bay. It's well worth making the detour off the coast path to go and have a look around.

The first transatlantic radio signal went from Poldhu Wireless Station to Guglielmo Marconi on Signal Hill in St. John's Newfoundland, Canada on December 12, 1901. The Marconi Center was built to commemorate this first transatlantic radio signal on December 12, 2001. At 4 p.m. local time, Lady Mary Holborrow, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, sent the three dots and the letter "s" was received at St John's, Newfoundland.
