3월 14, 2025, Coltishall Station

Coltishall Station is one of the narrow gauge stations on the Bure Valley Railway line. It's also an access point for the nine mile (14.5 km) Bure Valley Path.

I've ridden Marriotts way many times, and it's a great route. However foolishly I didn't appreciate how muddy many parts of it get when it's been wet.

Using the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention of the human spirit of discovery, the origins of which can be traced back to times long past. Thanks to such a construction, a watercourse - natural or artificial - could simply replace human or animal muscle power with the power of the natural elements, for example to grind grain into corn or to press oil from fruit. There are essentially two different ways of driving watermills: * Either the flowing water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or * the water is guided - usually through a so-called "mill channel" - above the wheel and falls onto the blades; this type of construction is more efficient due to natural gravity.

Medieval stone bridge open to cyclists and pedestrians, providing a handy crossing over the river that avoids the city traffic.

Pleasure to ride this mostly continuous path from Aylsham to Norwich (in dry conditions) through changing settings and off-road surfaces

One of the major stations and exits to towns along the Bure Valley path, with the paths along this stretch being compacted gravel

Good place to stop for a coffee and to refuel! Toilets here as well.

This was a lovely off road bike ride and ideal for families. Unfortunately, ruined by out of control dogs off leads, or if on a lead it is a long lead that is barely visible so is a trip hazard. Lots of dogs jump up at you and chase after livestock. I ride responsibly with regard for other users on this shared path but I will not be riding it again any time soon. It’s a shame as I have used it for many years but I’ve had enough of the large amount of dog walkers who use this trail.

It's thought that there had been a mill here since at least Saxon times. The 18th-century incarnation of Horstead Mill was once one of the most photographed in Britain, a fine sight on the River Bure. However, it burned down in 1963 and, today, only the lower parts of the building remain.

One of Norfolk's many ruined churches. Seems surprisingly common for the tower to be the only thing left.

Bure Valley Path is an off-road trail that runs alongside the Bure Valley Railway, a heritage railway from Wroxham to Aylsham. This section runs between the former stations of Wroxham and Coltishall, taking you on a well-surfaced trail that runs right next to the narrow gauge Bure Valley Railway. You are likely to spot both both steam and diesel locomotives chugging past.

Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden consists of 130 acres (52 ha) of ancient woodland with over 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of paths. It has a tearoom, gift shop, bird hides, children's nature trail and plant sales area. In the spring you can see the UK's finest collection of Candelabra Primulas as well as bluebells, camellia's and wood anemones. In summer there are Hydrangeas, Philadelphus and many wild flowers. Migrant birds and other wildlife come to the garden in the autumn, and there are many varieties of fungi and toadstools. In the winter you might be able to spot kingfishers, deer and otters. See the website for entrance fees and more details: https://www.fairhavengarden.co.uk/

Horstead watermill was burnt down in 1963 and all that remains is the lower section of the mill building. It was one of the biggest and most photographed mills in the country.

What a lovely railway this is, so cute and the route next to it for hiking or biking is so much fun to ride on bike. This is a highlight of my ride when I was passing, plus i could see the train passing.

In the woods of East Somerton are the ruins of St Mary’s church, with glassless windows, tumbling walls, and a tower where you can look up into the open sky. From the 15th-century, St Mary’s went from serving its own parish to becoming part of the larger parish of West Somerton. It fell into disuse in the 17th-century and has remained abandoned. The most striking feature is a tree in the centre of the ruins, known as “The Witch’s Leg.”

A truly magical place, St Mary's Church has been wrapped back up in nature since it was abandoned in the 17th century. The size of the oak tree that rises up in the centre of the ruins tells you just how long it has been since worshippers set foot inside. Legend has it that the tree grew from the wooden leg of a witch who was buried here.

Journeying between Aylsham and Norwich, Marriott's Way is a traffic free trail for hikers and cyclists. It follows the routes of two disused railway lines for 26 miles and passes through some glorious Norfolk countryside. Such as this just outside the city of Norwich.

lovely spot for a stretch, also looks like a good spot to wet a line!

A great place to stop and enjoy the views of all the activity on the river. Plenty of options for refreshments, or a choice of benches on the village green if you have brought your own with you.
