Stunning views from the summit

Approaching this mountain it makes you stop and admire the steep contour and shape. I said to myself "it is like a giant mole hill". Stunning to see.

High Crag, although lower than its near higher neighbour High Stile, gives excellent views of upper Ennerdale, Great Gable and across to Pillar and Pillar Rock. It is a steep pull up from Scarth Gap but most people tend to do this ridge west to east.

High Stile at 806m is the highest of the hills on the long ridge from Scarth Gap to Bourne End to the south of Buttermere and Crummock Water. High Stile is an excellent vantage point for the whole Buttermere valley and also south to Ennerdale and Pillar. As in so many cases, the Wainwright summit isn't at the highest point, the latter being the cairn above the narrow north ridge.

The official wainwright point is underwhelming. A tiny cairn and you pass the best views on your way.

Like all the lakes and low level routes that are more accessible, expect it to be busy

I've ascended via White Pike and via Scale Knott, and descended via both those and from the saddle down to the Mosedale Holly Tree, but has anyone ascended via Pillar Rake?

Good views over the surrounding fells and glimpses of Buttermere and Loweswater on the way up/down depending on your route.

The highest point of the Loweswater Fells and a great place for some peace and quiet.

Loweswater is one of the smaller lakes in the Lake District. It's unusual in that it drains towards the centre of the national park rather than towards the edge. It's owned and managed by the National Trust who maintain the paths around the lake. For a runner the circuit of the lake is a nice fairly flat loop of about 4.2 miles (6.8 km). It's a nice change to run around the wooded sides of the lake rather than the more exposed fells.

A great mountain pub with good views, a nice beer garden, excellent beer and well-cooked food. They also have rooms if you fancy a bit of luxury and a hearty breakfast before the days running.

The National Trust owns and maintains a series of these bothy style buildings around the country. Unlike a traditional mountain bothy, they are available for private hire through the NT holidays website. This one sleeps six on wooden sleeping platforms. There is a log burner but nothing else so it's a bit like camping with walls. The location on the southern bank of Loweswater is a great adventure base. The lakeside trail is a a nice easy run and Mellbreak Fell is nearby.
