If coming up from Troutbeck, this section has the hardest climb going up 16%. plenty of sections to pull over and rest legs if needed though.

Steep but gets you off the main road

If you pedal here then you get 10% discount. Outdoor or indoor seating. Table service outside. Bike is always in sight plus there are three Sheffield stands 👌 Toilet (Gents) was clean too - bodes well for those of you of a sit down persuasion.

Beware of free descending in the wet - it *appears* a shallow descent but you pick up speed quickly and there are some (otherwise lovely) sharp/blind turns.

Chesters is an excellent cafe known for its delicious vegan and vegetarian food. The food portions are generous, and the cafe has recently adopted more of an 'in and out' cafeteria style. Located by the river, Chesters provides both indoor and outdoor seating, making it a great spot to stop and admire the beautiful surroundings.

Good climb from either side, as of April 2024 there are lots of holes on the Coniston side so be careful

A quintessential Lakeland village, Coniston is sandwiched between a beautiful lake and a mountain range, both of which share its name. The village has an interesting history. It was home to poet John Ruskin during Victorian times, while the middle of the 20th century saw Donald Campbell break the world’s Water Speed Record four times on Coniston Water. He died attempting to break the record again on the lake in 1967. The Coniston Fells are a superb group, with many climbing routes on Dow Crag's east face, as well as marvellous winter walks when the snow arrives. Coniston has plenty of accommodation options and amenities.

the road on the eastern side of thirlmere is closed and may remain closed . a decision is expected in early 2024. so forget this ride

The garage probably has better snacks and supplies than the co-op..lots of pubs and cafes

Loads of outdoor seating and picnic benches close by if you have a packed lunch.

Ambio café is pretty nice but same unspeedy service. Worth the wait though
