Trollers Gill is a narrow limestone gorge in the Yorkshire Dales, near the village of Appletreewick in North Yorkshire. It has a mysterious reputation tied to local folklore. 🥾A great adventure for those who enjoy off-the-beaten-path routes and perfect introduction to Ghyll scrambling. 📜 The gorge is said to be haunted by trolls, hence its name. According to legend, it is home to a fearsome barghest—a supernatural black dog with glowing red eyes, often associated with death and misfortune. Some stories also link the ghyll to mythical goblins and other eerie creatures, adding to its reputation as a place of mystery. 🪨 The gorge is cut into limestone, featuring rocky outcrops, scree slopes, and a sometimes dry streambed. It was likely formed by glacial meltwater, carving out the dramatic landscape seen today. The ghyll can be dry for much of the year, but after heavy rain, water flows through the valley.

It has a sailing club and is a popular spot for walking, birdwatching and offers stunning views of the surrounding moorland and hills. A great boulder scramble when there has been heavy rainfall. If you don't fancy it then a shirt detour can be made

Simon's Seat is a prominent gritstone outcrop at 485m just within the Yorkshire Dales national park. There is a trig point and amazing views across the dales. Simon's Seat is on the Bolton Abbey estate and is accessible to all as it's on open access land.

Really dramatic scenery and an exhilarating scramble when the gill is full of water! Don't forget to take a peek in the cave on the right-hand side as you reach the top of the gill!

Skyreholme is a small hamlet situated near Appletreewick in the Yorkshire Dales.It can be found in a small valley containing Fir Beck, a tributary of the River Wharfe. Skyreholme is an old Norse name meaning bright water-meadow. On one side of the valley is Appletreewick Pasture, on the other side the scarp face of Simon's Seat.

To complete as a circular tour, it's best to start and finish in either Skyreholme or Appletreewick. There is limited parking in Skyreholme, but more parking available outside The Craven Arms in Appletreewick. The terrain is varied, but in parts quite technical, so therefore a shoe with maximum grip, protection and stability is required. Pub about 2 miles before the end and one at the end.

At this far end it has a more wild almost Highland feel. The river feeds the reservoir from off the peaty moorland and brings with it black water.....spooky.

Dry limestone river bed, take a torch to explore the horizontal mine shaft, located on the left just before you enter the gorge. Its very safe and not very long.
