An impressive summit. I loved viewing it from Fairfeld (reminded me of Chrome Hill in the Peak District) then the mini scramble down cofa pike before ascending again to the summit.

Very popular with wild campers.

Red Tarn lies on the eastern flank of Helvellyn within a small valley. On the east and south sides of the lake you can see Striding Edge, a ridge that connects Helvellyn and Nethermost Pike to the ascent. The path up Helvellyn is almost entirely made of rock steps or slabs of existing scree. The circular route down via Lower Man and Whiteside summit is mostly a path through lichen and grass. The views over the peaks of the Lake District are magnificent. The national park is located in north-west England between the cities of Carlisle and Lancaster. There are plenty of car parks for hikers - but these are rare at weekends or in high season.

Good spot for a break

Grisedale gives access to many of the finest adventures in the Eastern Fells, including Striding Edge on Helvellyn, Pinnacle Ridge on St Sunday Crag and the wild-feeling ridges and gullies of Nethermost Pike and Dollywaggon Pike. One of the national park's longer side valleys, it gets increasingly remote the further in you venture.

A giant presence beyond the southern end of Ullswater, St Sunday Crag is one of the finest mountains in the Eastern Fells. The Pinnacle Ridge, a grade three classic is the most coveted mountaineering route to the summit. Cofa Pike, on the ridge connecting to Fairfield, also provides excitement, though without anywhere near the technicality of Pinnacle Ridge.

Great views over to Helvelyn & Striding Edge and down the valley towards Ulswater

A long rocky ridgeline fell that is a prominent feature on the Patterdale skyline. It's part of the Fairfield massive but also works well to create an arm of a horseshoe style run up Helvellyn. Amazing scrambling up the north-west face which is used in the Lakes Sky Ultra.
