Following the steep, winding road between Portmagee and St. Finian’s Bay leads to the Coomanaspig Pass: a rugged mountain pass at an altitude of 185 meters, where the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish interior meet in a single panorama. From the summit, a 360-degree view unfolds—the pointed Skellig Islands on one side, the green valleys of the Iveragh Peninsula on the other. The climb itself, with gradients of up to 15% and sharp bends, feels like a mini expedition. At the top, where wind and clouds have free rein, you experience the Wild Atlantic Way in its purest form: grand, silent, and pristine.

Arrive at sunset in Portmagee. This tiny, picturesque village takes its name from the pirate Magee, who landed here in ancient times. It's the starting point for expeditions to the mystical Skelligs Islands.

Waterville is a seafront village with amazing coastal views. The Kerry Way long distance trail goes through here so it's a useful place to stop for accommodation, refreshments or supplies. Charlie Chaplin used to love this place and regularly spent holidays here, hence the statue.

Excellent solution to avoid having to retrace the same paths you have already travelled.

Of course, there are many lovely pubs in Ireland where you can also eat well. This one is located in a lovingly restored house on the Kerry Way. https://blindpiperpub.ie/ And there is a story to the name too: "Mici Cumba O'Sullivan or An Piobaire Cumba as he was better known was born in Castlecove, Co Kerry about 1835. He became partially blind while living in Massachusetts where he had emigrated early and was later to return to Kerry with his wife and daughter. His fame spread quickly after he was discovered by Mr Wayland, President of the Pipers Club. Wayland recorded several of his pieces on Ediphone including the beautiful lament 'Gol na mban san Ar' for the Irish who died fighting the Cromwellians at the Battle of Cnoc na nOs near Mallow Co Cork in 1649. The late piper Willie Clancy was so deeply impressed by O'Sullivan's recording that he stated that if he had heard such a playing in his youth he would have spent his life trying to make all his music sound like that. Mici, however, was not so keen on the latest technology. When he heard the phonograph playing his tunes, Mici frowned and gave it several blows with the stick before he was restrained. I could not see anything due to rain, mist, clouds, fog? But I could tell it was lovely by the climb and the signs around. 🤣🤣 It was still a great day though

Quite a climb and gets steep near the top, worth it for the view and the peel down the other side though!
