In Mullingar the Old Railway Track and the Royal Canal Way can be seen, two very nice Greenways connecting West and East Ireland through the beautiful Irish Midlands.

Head down the track if you want to see the christian monastery that is Fore Abbey/ It was founded by St Feichin in 630AD. it is believed that there were as many as 300 monks and 2000 students in residence in its heyday. An amazing place and a great rest stop.

If you want to have a nice scenic vista just head off down the track here on your bike to the shore of Lough Ennell. The lough is well known for the large amount of swans that can be found on its treelined shores.

Lough Owel is a crystal clear mesotrophic lough with a maximum depth of 21 metres. The lough is popular for wild swimming as well as bird watching with many species to look out for.

Head off the main road down the track to reach the beautiful waters of Lough Ennell. Surrounded by trees with swans swimming by, it makes a lovely spot to stop for a picnic.

This beautiful lock marks the western end of the Summit Level of the Royal Canal. It's a wonderful spot to relax featuring picnic seats and benches, a wildflower garden, children's playground, and a coffee shop.

Head down the track to find the impressive ruins of the Benedictine and early Gaelic 7th century Abbey. Perfect spot for a snack stop.

Mullingar is a beautiful town in County Westmeath with lots to explore. You can recover from your run by indulging in some culture by visiting the wonderful Cathedral of Christ King or Belvedare House & Gardens, or you could join the locals in one of the many great pubs and restaurants including the very popular Danny Byrnes pub.
