Rosenheim, with approximately 65,000 inhabitants, lies in the Inn Valley at an altitude of 446 meters. Within the city limits, the Mangfall River flows into the Inn. To the northeast lies the Chiemgau region, to the southeast the terrain rises towards the Chiemgau Alps, and to the southwest the Mangfall Mountains. The city is an important transportation hub (by road and rail) between Munich, Salzburg, and Innsbruck, as well as the Brenner Pass to Italy. Due to its location, the city offers a high recreational value. Within a radius of about 25 km are Lake Chiemsee, Lake Simssee, and about a dozen other lakes suitable for swimming, as well as the mountains of the northern Alpine foothills, including the Wendelstein, Hochries, and Kampenwand, which are ideal for skiing, hiking, cycling, mountain biking, and paragliding/hang gliding. Rosenheim boasts several attractions (museums, locomotive sheds, etc.), various festivals (e.g., the Rosenheim Autumn Festival), and many excellent bars, cafés, and restaurants.

The late Gothic hall church was built in the second quarter of the 15th century, severely damaged by fire in 1702, and remodeled in the Baroque style in 1720. The church building, which was extended by the western annex in 1923, underwent extensive interior renovations from 2008 to 2010.

The station opened in 1876.
