As a result of the War of the Austrian Succession, Dettingen became the scene of a huge battle on June 27, 1743 between English, Austrian and Hanoverian troops on one side and the French army on the other. The conflict began with the death of Emperor Charles VI in 1740, who was to be succeeded by his daughter, which Prussia, Bavaria and Saxony did not recognize and made territorial claims. France, which supported Bavaria, set up an army of 45,000 men under Marshal Duke of Noailles in the spring of 1743, which set up camp between Seligenstadt and Stockstadt. A 50,000-strong force under George II of England (with the English troop leader Lord Stair) came from Flanders to help Empress Maria and Theresa. Source: Information board at the site
