The Schutter is a left tributary of the Danube, flowing through the Altmühltal Nature Park and the city of Ingolstadt. The name first appears as a settlement name on a 2nd-century inscription: VIK(ani) SCU[T]T(arenses). Nevertheless, the name may be of Germanic origin and related to the verb *skeut-a- "to shoot" in the sense of "fast-flowing, rushing water."
