Good starting point for a hike in the Waldnaabtal.

The Muckenthaler Teichpfanne is an impressive pond landscape known for its diverse flora and fauna. Hiking there, you can enjoy the tranquil nature, observe numerous birds, and experience the special atmosphere of the old carp ponds such as the Mondsee, the Riesslitzer Teich, and the Silbersee.

The Waldnaabtal Hammermühle hiking car park is an excellent starting point for hikes into the Waldnaabtal valley or to Falkenberg. It is easily accessible from the A 93.

The Schwallohbach, 80 m above the Butterfass, flows into the Waldnaab in a hanging valley with a more or less visible waterfall, depending on the amount of water.

As it flows, the Waldnaab grinds away granite blocks lying in the riverbed. The anvil is particularly strongly undercut in two directions: one toward the oncoming water (windward, impact side) and—at first glance surprising—also on the opposite side (leeward), i.e., downstream. On the upstream side, the grinding is easily explained by drifting debris, gravel, and sand. On the leeward side, the circulating currents collide, creating eddies that similarly erode the granite.
