Behlendorf is a former fishing village and was first mentioned in 1405. In 1802, the district administrator K. F. Baath bought the village and had the estate redesigned by the young K. F. Schinkel. The result was an octagonal layout based on the English model, with houses for farm workers, barns, granaries, and outbuildings and residential buildings. All buildings were constructed of pegged fieldstone (smaller fieldstones are placed in the joints), except for the manor house, which was a plastered structure. In the decades that followed, the estate grew until 1946, when the landowning family was expropriated and the land was redistributed as part of the land reform. From 1965 onwards, the GDR's first industrial dairy farm operated here. Today, four families are committed to preserving the complex. It also includes a riding stable with a horse boarding facility. And then there is the collection of old agricultural machinery, which shows you how people used to work in the countryside – and which is sure to pose a few puzzles for you.
