Hogsback is an easily recognizable peak from town. There is a distinctive ridge traveling up to the summit, and the trail itself is as steep as they come. It's easy to get "spooked" when it's time to head downhill because of how steep the slopes are off the sides of the trail. The lookout from the top is worth the efforts to get up and down, though.

You climb around 1500 feet over 3 miles to the summit from the trailhead. The peak sticks out above the trees, and you get fantastic views over Durango and the snake-like Animas River. Doing the trail clockwise gets the steeper portion out of the way first and leaves you a slightly easier descent.

The Animas City Mountain is a popular destination just north of Downtown Durango. Around five miles of hiking trails offer stunning views over the Durango area and the Hermosa, Falls Creek and Animas Valleys. You can take a stroll here on a nice Sunday or just hike after work. The highest point is at 8,169 feet. The upper part of the mountain might be closed during elk calving season.

The Animas Mountain Trail is a fun trail that takes you all the way up to the scenic summit of Animas City Mountain. The trail offers great views over the Hermosa and Animas Valleys. You can hike it as a loop or connect it to some of the other trails on the mountain. The upper mountain might be closed for elk calving.

The wild Animas River is a tributary of the even more majestic San Juan River. It flows over 126 miles and passes ghost towns like Animas Forks, Eureka and Howardsville. Here in Durango, you can take a stroll along its rushing waters and enjoy a sit in the Rotary Park at the shoreline.

If you are already in the area, you should take some time for a stroll through Downtown Durango – a Nationally Registered Historic District – with its beautiful historic buildings, nice restaurants and cool breweries. Durango is also the southern terminus of the famous steam train, that you can ride on between here and Silverton. If you plan to hike the long-distance Colorado Trail, Durango is practically the southwestern end with the terminus just five miles from here.
