The Göttingen Kiessee is a 15-hectare lake on the southwestern outskirts of the city. Formed by gravel mining, it has become one of Göttingen's most important recreational areas. The approximately 2.5-kilometer-long lakeside path is popular with joggers, walkers, and anglers throughout the year. The lake is only one to two meters deep and, as a result, is threatened by algal blooms and accelerated silting. To improve the freshwater supply, an inlet was built in 2003 to divert water from the Leine River, which flows east of the lake, into the lake. From an ecological perspective, however, this measure is completely pointless, as intensive agriculture in the Leine catchment area washes large quantities of fertilizer into the river, and these nutrients further accelerate the silting of the Kiessee. Therefore, the inlet is reduced or even closed, especially in warm early summers. http://stadt-natur-wildnis.de/wild/kiessee-goettingen/

A very beautiful, extensive wetland biotope has been created at the Flütewehr in recent years. A paradise for insects 🐞🪲🐝🦋🐌🪰🪳, amphibians 🐸🦎🐍, birds 🐦🐦⬛, ducks🦆🦆 and geese 🪿🪿. With a bit of luck you can also see the dwarf zebu cattle 🐂🐃🐂🐃, called zebu for short, between the tall thistles, grasses and other species-rich plants that are partly left to their own devices. The zebu's do their job as landscape gardeners and ensure that part of this biotope area is kept free and open. A hike or walk to the Flütewehr and the surrounding area is actually worthwhile at any time of year, because the biotope landscape is constantly changing.

Trips through the Leienauen and the Kiesse area offer interesting things in every season. Migrating and resident waterfowl can often be observed. Considerable cormorant colony.

Prepared by humans and perfected by nature. The new biotope Flüthewehr has been created on the south side of the Kiessee. On a large area behind the Flüthewehr, nature is largely left to its own devices. Nature lovers and those seeking relaxation can and should go to observation posts there.
