For a symbolic mark The 33-meter-high water tower next to the railway bridge towers over the silhouette of the city harbor and is now the end of the harbor promenade. But this striking building, which has been a listed building for several decades, was almost demolished in the 1980s. The water tower was built in 1908 on behalf of the Oldenburg State Railway. It was mainly used to supply steam locomotives with water. The tower was therefore built directly on the Hunte, outside the actual railway area. Here it could be filled with water from the Hunte to operate the steam locomotives. Steam locomotives need large amounts of water to generate steam. The water is heated to steam using a fuel, such as coal. This steam then drives the locomotive.
